Orthotic braces, or orthoses, are used to provide support to a weakened body part or joint.
If your doctor agrees a back brace is medically necessary, they can write a prescription. Medicare considers back braces “prefabricated orthotics” which falls into a wide category of DEMPOS (durable medical equipment, prosthetics, orthotics, and supplies).
Medicare will cover rigid or semi-rigid knee braces. They're covered because they're considered durable medical equipment with the presumption that the brace will hold up for at least three years.
Back Braces and Knee Braces are covered under Part B of Medicare. Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) covers medically necessary back braces under the durable medical equipment (DME) prefabricated orthotics benefit.
